Week 29 – Reduced Bench Development Day

Date: July 15, 2026
Age: 39
Bodyweight: ~81 kg

Context: This was the final bench-development session before your July 20–28 work trip and was intentionally reduced to preserve readiness for Friday’s planned raw top-single session. The goal was to maintain bench exposure without accumulating unnecessary fatigue.

Abdominal Work

Skipped.

You noticed a mild but distinct sensation around the lower abdominal/pelvic/groin region. There was no pain, but hard bracing appeared to reproduce or increase awareness of it.

Given the recent combination of:

  • 150 kg deadlifts,
  • plate-loaded leg press,
  • dumbbell Romanian deadlifts,
  • 115 kg squats,
  • hanging leg raises,
  • ab crunches,
  • and frequent heavy bracing,

you suspected that the region may have been overstretched or mildly fatigued.

Session Interpretation / Why This Session Matters

This session accomplished exactly what it was designed to accomplish.

You maintained exposure to:

  • moderate-volume bench work,
  • a paused heavy single,
  • and a submaximal heavy double,

without repeating the full fatigue of last Wednesday’s 125 × 3.

The most important result was:

125 × 2 @ RPE 8

That is exactly where we wanted the development work to land.

It was heavy enough to preserve familiarity with loads close to Friday’s target, but light enough that it should not create meaningful residual fatigue.

The 125 kg Double

Your recent development work now looks like:

DatePerformance
June 24125 × 3 @ RPE 8–8.5
July 8125 × 3 @ RPE 8.5
July 15125 × 2 @ RPE 8

The lower RPE today is expected because you intentionally performed one fewer rep.

The value of today’s double was not proving additional strength. It was reinforcing:

  • setup,
  • unrack confidence,
  • raw joint tolerance,
  • and clean execution at approximately 94% of Friday’s planned 132.5 kg attempt.

You should leave this session with substantially less fatigue than if you had repeated another triple.

Lower Abdominal / Pelvic / Groin Observation

Skipping abs was the correct decision.

The fact that you describe:

  • no actual pain,
  • only a noticeable stretched or unusual feeling,
  • and greater awareness during hard bracing,

is somewhat reassuring. However, because the region is involved in forceful bracing, hip stabilization, squatting, deadlifting, and leg raises, it is worth monitoring rather than repeatedly testing.

Your recent workload provides several plausible sources:

  • Deadlifts require strong abdominal and pelvic stabilization.
  • Squats require circumferential bracing.
  • Hanging leg raises heavily involve the hip flexors and lower abdominal region.
  • Your leg-press and RDL accessory session added additional hip loading.

This may simply be accumulated muscular fatigue or a mild strain-like response, but the exact tissue cannot be identified from the description alone.

For now, I would:

  • avoid direct abdominal work,
  • avoid hanging leg raises,
  • avoid aggressive groin stretching,
  • avoid repeatedly forcefully bracing just to test the sensation,
  • keep normal daily movement if comfortable.

Since tomorrow is already a complete recovery day, the timing is favorable.

Implication for Friday

Your bench performance supports the planned 132.5 kg raw attempt.

However, the lower abdominal/groin sensation adds one more readiness checkpoint.

Heavy benching still involves substantial leg drive and bracing. Friday morning, assess:

  1. Is the sensation reduced after a recovery day?
  2. Can you brace normally without discomfort?
  3. Does setting your arch or using leg drive reproduce it?
  4. Does it remain merely noticeable, or has actual pain developed?

If it is improving, painless, and does not interfere with setup or leg drive, the planned top-single progression may still be reasonable.

If forceful bracing produces pain—or if the sensation becomes sharper or more localized—I would avoid a maximal-style attempt and repeat 130 kg or reduce the session.

Current Readiness for Friday

Bench strength

Excellent

  • 122.5 × 4 × 3 @ RPE 8
  • 125 × 2 @ RPE 8
  • Repeated 130 kg singles @ RPE 8

Elbows

Trending substantially better.

Rotator cuff

Continuing gradual improvement.

General upper-body fatigue

Well managed through today’s reduced session.

Lower abdominal / pelvic / groin region

New variable to monitor during Thursday recovery.

Biggest Takeaway

From a bench-programming perspective, today went exactly according to plan.

You reduced the volume, completed 125 × 2 @ RPE 8, and avoided unnecessary direct triceps work. You should be positioned well for Friday.

The only reason to alter Friday now would be a meaningful change in the lower abdominal/groin sensation—not a concern about your bench strength. Your recent performance provides a strong case that 132.5 kg raw is within your current capacity, provided your body feels normal enough to brace and execute the lift safely.
