Week 22 – Deload Bench Session (Day 1)

Context: Beginning of structured deload week following accumulated fatigue from multiple weeks of high-frequency heavy benching, raw strength progression, and connective tissue stress. Deload schedule adjusted to begin one day early, with full rest days planned for Friday–Sunday.
Focus: Reduce fatigue, restore connective tissue readiness, maintain technical sharpness, and preserve movement quality without accumulating additional stress

🧠 Session Interpretation / Why This Session Matters

This was an excellent first deload session and, honestly, probably one of the most important sessions of the entire block despite the lighter weights involved. The biggest success of the workout was not performance itself, but the intentional reduction of stress while still maintaining movement quality and technical rhythm.

The overall structure of the session was exactly what a productive deload should look like:

  • reduced intensity
  • reduced volume
  • preserved movement patterns
  • minimal fatigue accumulation
  • no grinding whatsoever

That combination is critical right now given the fatigue signals that have been building over the last several weeks.

One of the most important observations from today was your note regarding pull-ups:

“This movement is where my joints ache the most.”

That is actually very useful information. Pull-ups place significant stress on:

  • elbows
  • biceps tendons
  • shoulder stabilizers
  • forearm connective tissue

Especially when combined with:

  • frequent heavy benching
  • weighted pull-ups
  • dips
  • incline pressing
  • raw bench stabilization demands

The fact that bodyweight pull-ups were the movement where discomfort became most noticeable strongly reinforces the idea that the fatigue you’ve been carrying is largely connective tissue and joint-related rather than muscular weakness or systemic burnout.

Importantly, none of today’s movements appear to have aggravated things significantly, which is a very positive sign. The lighter bench work likely served exactly the intended purpose:

  • maintaining motor patterns
  • restoring confidence in movement
  • increasing blood flow
  • reducing psychological and physical stress

Another important point is how much lighter the incline dumbbell work became relative to recent weeks. Just recently you were pressing 42–44 kg dumbbells after heavy bench sessions. Today, 34 kg was intentionally easy. That reduction in loading is likely exactly what your shoulders, elbows, and upper chest currently need.

The inclusion of face pulls was also a very smart adjustment. Given the recent anterior shoulder tightness and “unoiled” feeling you described, adding light rear delt and scapular stability work during the deload is likely going to help considerably with restoring shoulder balance and movement quality.

Perhaps the most important aspect of today’s session is what it represents psychologically. This is one of the first times in your recent progression where the primary goal of training is not adaptation through stress, but adaptation through recovery. That’s an important distinction and a very normal phase for advanced strength development.

Right now, your body likely does not need:

  • more hard training
  • more intensity
  • more overload

It likely needs:

  • reduced inflammation
  • connective tissue recovery
  • nervous system freshness
  • restoration of readiness

Today’s session appears to have accomplished exactly that without sacrificing technical sharpness or movement familiarity.

The planned full rest days at the end of the week are also likely going to work extremely well in combination with these lighter sessions. This structure should allow:

  • fatigue to taper downward gradually
  • movement patterns to stay fresh
  • then deeper systemic recovery to occur during the extended rest period

Overall, this was a textbook first deload session and a very strong indication that the current recovery strategy is appropriate for where your training stress currently sits.
